Hello Members,

We hope your summer is going well and we have some big news! USGBC-CA 2025 Committee Leadership Applications open July 10th! Below you will find an overview of leadership positions, the application process and timeline, and everything else we hope you will need to know to join a committee leadership team.

We encourage members from all areas of California to apply for leadership positions within our committees. It is an excellent opportunity to enhance your leadership skills, network with other passionate sustainability advocates, guide the impact of our work, and have fun in the process.

Don’t just take it from us. Here’s what three members have to say about their experience in Committee leadership:

“As Marketing & Events Chair on San Diego's WIG+ Chapter, I've had the pleasure of curating events that create space for women+ who are shifting the narrative on empowerment, access, and impact in the green built environment & sustainability space. My role on the WIG+ Committee has been an incredible experience to not only grow my network but also, to foster growth for a community of people that I am deeply inspired by. It's allowed me to witness firsthand the power that is women+ collaboration in driving innovation and positive change.” – Chloé Rigby, Marketing & Events Chair for San Diego Women In Green

“It’s been such an honor to serve as a co-chair for the green home committee. I’m grateful for the support from the USGBC-CA staff has provided to facilitate the committee meetings and activities. I’m excited to be a part of this community of passionate and dedicated people who really care.” – Izumi Tanaka, Co-Chair for Green Homes

“Being a committee ambassador for the USGBC California committee groups has been an incredibly rewarding experience. One of the most fulfilling aspects of this role has been the ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, from industry leaders and policy makers to educators and community members. This position has allowed me to be at the forefront of innovative discussions and initiatives that are shaping the future of green building in California. Moreover, being a committee ambassador has significantly expanded my professional network and opened doors to numerous opportunities for personal and career growth. The collaborative spirit and shared mission of the USGBC community inspire me daily and reaffirm my belief in the importance of our work.” – Ashley Yong, Former Committee Ambassador for Women in Green, Building Decarb, and Emerging Professionals

Committee Leadership Guidelines

Committee leadership serves a 2-year term for a maximum of two terms. To be considered, you must be a USGBC-CA member in good standing.

Committee Leadership Positions

Committee (Co)-Chairs serve as the strategic lead for developing new initiatives, coordinating with mission-aligned partners, and overseeing the continued implementation of successful programs, community outreach, committee member volunteer retention, and recruitment. Chairs are responsible for developing the committee’s annual plan, budget, and agendas for monthly meetings.

The Advocacy Lead is the main point of contact to USGBC-CA advocacy and/or policy staff regarding all advocacy-related committee efforts. This role provides support and coordination for programs/events as they relate to advocacy.

The Events Lead serves as logistics and coordination lead for Committee events, including:

  • Liaising with the USGBC-CA Events team to plan, execute, and produce events.
  • Own the calendar of events for the Committee and communicate with Committee members and USGBC-CA staff regarding the annual events plan.

This role will also help recruit committee members to assist with events, including designating roles and responsibilities.

The Marketing Lead serves as logistics and coordination lead for Committee marketing, including liaising with the USGBC-CA Marketing team to plan, execute, and produce marketing materials for the committee.

The Operational Lead provides operational support and upkeep for Committee operations, including liaising with USGBC-CA Operations team to ensure the committee has all resources needed for optimal committee performance (i.e. member portal access, roster, venue deposits, etc.)

The Committee Advisor acts as a subject matter expert for the Committee to provide guidance, feedback, and input on white papers, expert panels, and more.

Leadership Application Timeline

Statewide vs. Regional Committees

Statewide committees will convene monthly meetings to engage committee members around relevant topics, plan events, develop initiatives, and collaborate with relevant subject matter experts.

Regional subcommittees will meet as needed to plan events, host guest speakers, and collaborate with the committee on upcoming events and initiatives.

Voting

Voting Process will be facilitated by the Chair/Co-Chairs and Ambassadors of each committee starting with the Nomination Process on the second Wednesday of July of each year.

Committee members can nominate themselves or other people for open leadership roles by submitting this form by September 6, 2024.

Judges will include all current committee leadership roles, subcommittee leaders, the board liaison, additional board members, and/or staff on an as-needed basis. If a committee position is open throughout the year, committee leadership has the ability to appoint/confirm leadership positions on an as-needed basis with candidates using the same submission form link above.
