Resources for Those Affected by the LA Wildfires

By Kayla Mak posted 29 days ago

As we begin this new year, we want to acknowledge the challenges our community is facing, especially those impacted by the ongoing wildfires. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to the public workers and firefighters who continue to protect and serve, and our deepest condolences are with everyone affected. This moment serves as a powerful reminder that our collective work toward sustainability and protecting our planet is more important than ever. Every one of us has been or knows someone who has been affected by climate change, today. Each effort we make contributes to building a safer, more resilient future for all of us.

We encourage you to leverage the resources below and use them and others to better prepare for the next challenge. After the dust has settled and the smoke has cleared, it will be time to focus on healing and rebuilding. Together, we can make 2025 a year of resilience, growth, and meaningful positive change. Stay safe, follow guidelines as directed, and don’t hesitate to evacuate—your safety is the top priority. We can’t build this vision for a greener future without you.

From the Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy:

Here are updates on how we’re moving forward at our preserves:

Cottonwood Canyon: A large amount of ash was deposited in Cottonwood Canyon, and we’re taking steps to test the toxicity levels in the ash and soil. Until we can better assess the risk, all our planned events have been cancelled.

Millard Canyon: We've been unable to survey Millard Canyon but expect to visit soon to assess the effects of fire and wind. We’ll then determine what needs to be done and set schedules - until further notice this area is closed to public access.

Rosemont Preserve: We hope to hold our regular restoration event at Rosemont on Saturday, February 8th. We ask that everyone participating please wear PPE (KN95 or higher face mask or respirator, gloves, and goggles) and take measures to minimize disturbing ash and kicking it up into the air.

Rubio Canyon: We have not been able to return to the area to survey Rubio Canyon, but we do know much of the chaparral habitat, and both structures along with our stored restoration tools have burned. We plan to visit soon to assess the effects of fire, and until we can do so all events are cancelled. We’ll be sharing more information on post-fire restoration when we can.

Sunshine Preserve: We hope to hold the regular Sunshine restoration event on Saturday, February 15th. Debris from the wind storms must be cleared and we'll continue our work of removing invasive species and planting new native ones. We ask that everyone participating please wear PPE (KN95 or higher face mask or respirator, gloves, and goggles) and take measures to minimize disturbing ash and kicking it up into the air.

Sycamore Canyon: Unfortunately, we lost the tools we use at Sycamore in the Eaton Fire making us unable to continue restoration work as normal. If anyone has their own tools they can bring to a restoration event (loppers, mattocks, flat and round shovels, and hard rakes), or has extra tools they are able to donate to us at this time, please reach out to Tim at timmartinez@arroyosfoothills.org.

Here are some resources on post-fire safety, air quality, health risks, and wildlife:
